Herdade do Monte da Ribeira dates back to April 8, 1958, being acquired in 1986 by the entrepreneur Victor Carmona e Costa who, in the following 15 years, not only completely renovated the Herdade but also implemented the entire current agricultural production structure and winery.
The Herdade is owned by Casa Agrícola HMR SA, which is entirely owned by a foundation that follows the name of its founding members - the Victor e Graça Carmona e Costa Foundation. With its headquarters and gallery in Lisbon, the Foundation is dedicated to support contemporary art in Portugal, and Casa Agrícola HMR SA is one of its foundational assets.
The estate is located in the parish of Pedrogão, in the Vidigueira municipality, near the village of Marmelar - about 17 km east of Vidigueira.
Close to the Alqueva reservoir, about 13 km in a straight line.
The overall property unfolds throughout 1,050 hectares, the majority of which is on the south slopes of Serra do Mendro. The area is characterized by Mediterranean forest vegetation, with several species of native trees, including Cork Oak, Wild Olive Tree, Holm Oak, and Strawberry Tree.
The first vineyard was planted in 1989, yielding its first harvest in 1992, giving rise to the Vidigueira brand. Later, Pousio, Quatro Caminhos, and Marmelar brands were created.
In recent years, the vineyards were expanded and restructured, occupying now a total of 43 hectares. White grape varieties (Alvarinho, Antão Vaz, Arinto, Roupeiro, and Verdelho), etc. represent one-third of the total vineyard area, while red grape varieties (Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Baga, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, and Trincadeira), etc. fulfilled the remaining area.
Since its first harvest, it was been honored with several national and international awards and distinctions.
In 2018, the first single variety wine was released, the Pousio “Alicante Boushet”, recognized nationally and internationally for its excellent quality.
The following year, were presented the brands "Quatro Caminhos", “Pousio Selection”, “Pousio Escolha”, “Pousio Reserva” and Premium red “Marmelar”. The following year saw the released of the “Pousio Arinto”, known for its freshness and grapefruit notes.
In the early summer of 2020, the new bivarietal Pousio Antão Vaz e Alvarinho, was launched, offering a fresh and intense wine.
More recently, in October 2023, the Parcela 98 and Syrahwere added to the range—two wines with unique characteristics sourced from exclusive plots in limited editions.
Pursuing the ambition to create the finest wines, Herdade do Monte da Ribeira always strives to do more and better.
The Herdade has always had tradition non irrigated olive groves present throughout the region. But it was with the construction of an irrigation system based on three newly built dams that Dr. Victor Carmona e Costa, between 1989 and 2008, was able to plant intensive and super-intensive olive groves that, together with the traditional olive grove, currently occupy 210 hectares of the property.
In 2016, “Pousio” and “Pousio Premium” olive oils were released - high-quality extra virgin olive oils with acidity below 0.3%.
In 2018, a third product was added to the range of olive oils - “Pousio Clássico” - an extra virgin olive oil produced with the ripest olives from traditional olive groves, with excellent cooking and seasoning abilities.
In the 2020/21 harvest, a very good year, the Herdade's olive production exceeded 1,000 tons.
To homage to its Millenary and Centenary Olive Trees, in 2022, “Pousio Homenagem Oliveiras Centenárias” was launched - a field blend that brings together notes of dried fruit and the sweetness of the centenary varieties, most of which are Galega with hints of Verdeal.
